April Vibes: Galungan, Kuningan, and Mekotek

Galungan & Kuningan

Galungan is one of Bali’s most important religious holidays, marking the celebration of the victory of good (Dharma) over evil (Adharma). Streets come alive with tall, beautifully decorated bamboo poles called penjor, a common sight throughout the island. This celebration spans three days: Penampahan Galungan on April 22, 2025, where offerings are prepared; Hari Raya Galungan on April 23, 2025, the main day of prayers and temple visits; and Manis Galungan on April 24, 2025, a day for families to gather and celebrate.

This image shows Tanah Lot Temple, one of Bali’s most iconic sea temples, perched on a rocky outcrop along the coastline. Two traditional Balinese penjors—decorative bamboo poles—flank the entrance, adding cultural significance and beauty to the scene. The temple is surrounded by greenery and offers a serene and spiritual atmosphere, especially at sunrise or sunset.

The festival doesn’t end there. Ten days later, on May 3, 2025, comes Kuningan, marking the departure of ancestral spirits back to the heavens, with offerings and ceremonies taking place throughout Bali. Don’t miss this incredible time to experience the spiritual energy flowing through the island’s temples!

Mekotek is one of those wild, only-in-Bali traditions. Held during Kuningan, which is April 30, 2025, this unique pole battle ritual takes place in the village of Munggu. Locals gather to clash tall bamboo poles together in an exciting display of strength and unity. Originally performed to celebrate victory in battle, Mekotek now serves to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune to the community. Whether you’re watching or joining in, it’s a great way to experience Bali’s rich traditions during this unique celebration.
